\nHere we can start discussing the first book :)

\n
\nSo as I read this book, I thought of a bunch of side topics of how how this book and topic can lead to the different subjects. It would be great for science and too teach students the importance of endangered species and recycling. It also shows how fishes and ocean life are not just born in the ocean. It really opens the scope for students to begin exploring fishes and aquariums. This could be a great text to read at the beginning of the unit, to get students thinking ait all these important ideas.

I think that it would be helpful to have his book (Aliki) towards the beginning of the unit as well. I really enjoyed the visual construction of the book and how vivid the picture are. I also found it very helpful, how they labeled the different animals. I could easily see how this book would be a great reference for the students, especially if we elect to have the student do a nonfiction writing piece. I think it may also be helpful to incorporate how to help save the endangered animals and what exactly they could do from Brooklyn.","dateCreated":"1331355288","smartDate":"Mar 9, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"ejd283","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ejd283","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"51540768","body":"ejd283 = Elizabeth - Sorry forgot to label.","dateCreated":"1331355362","smartDate":"Mar 9, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"ejd283","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ejd283","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"51542068","body":"I definitely agree with you Elizabeth, I think that book portrays what a child would see at the Aquarium if they were to visit it. What I found interesting was how the book was based on multiple aquariums. We can use them to our advantage by explaining to students how aquariums have a similarity amongst them, especially in terms of animals and how they are set up to allow visitors to experience the aquatic life. I believe that the other nonfiction text you provided us with called the aquarium was extremely illustrative as well. I found a similar book at my local library and I'm wondering whether to use it as well, even if it's merely to use to explain images, such as "this is the shark filter or these are jelly fishes." I believe we can make several lessons out of this book, the Aliki one. We can have a picture walk and see what aquatic animals students know already.

By scientific locale, I mean that students can learn about science through visually seeing their surroundings.
\n
\n The Aquarium has a rich history, I did research on it this past weekend and actually visited it on my own account in order to get more information. It was initially built around Battery Park City and in 1957 it moved to Brooklyn. The issue remains controversial and it would be interesting to do research on why it is so. Charles Townsend was the famous zoologist, whom controlled the Aquarium for several years. During his lifetime the aquarium boasted around 150 species of animals. It wasn't until there was an issue surrounding a tunnel construction that the Aquarium had to be moved from its Battery City locale to a different one. However, a new place had not been established yet so animals were sent to the Bronx Zoo. It was after WW II that Coney Island became the new home for these aquatic animals.
\n
\nWe can definitely find research on Brooklyn and how the people felt about the opening of a new Aquarium. Also, this can direct in some way to Coney Island. The main ideas that are transferable to other areas in life are learning how an Aquarium can be culturally stimulating to a group of people. For instance, what do people get out of going to an aquarium? They visually see and learn about species of animals where they've previously had only seen in textbooks and online. Students can learn the importance of caring for certain species of animals that are endangered. They can take notice of how they can make a difference by recycling, not littering, limiting their electrical usage, etc. This makes for a great recycling lesson and savvy energy usage talk at school. Students can also be taught math by estimating how many fishes are located in a certain tank. They have to use their estimation skills and also multiplication arrays in order to further assist them. In terms of reading, students can read books on the aquarium and learn new terms, such as tanks, schools of fishes, aquatic, etc.
\n
\nSome questions we want answered by this unit are the following:
\n
\nWhat essential characteristics about aquariums make it unique in relation to other scientific areas, such museums, zoos, and so on?
\n
\nHow has the aquarium allowed students to gain a better idea on Estimation and Multiplication Areas?
\n
\nHave students used the aquatic vocabulary in their writing?
\n
\nThese are just some thoughts on Essential Questions, I need to hear feedback from both of you though. Then, I can think of more specific questions in relation to our topic.
\n
\nHow about you Elizabeth? I've been wanting to hear your thoughts!!
\n
\nRicha, let me know what you think.
